How to Join our Community

Check out the map above (click on a region to see details) or the list below.

Something Already There?

Get in touch with the local community – e.g. by joining the mailing list or attending the next meetup. You could also apply to be an Ambassador – we welcome multiple Ambassadors per region! Remember local groups can always benefit from more help and will love to hear from you!

Nothing on the Map Yet?

Apply to be an Ambassador and represent the network in your region or … Get together with others and start a Local Group. If you’re already part of a non-profit organisation working on openness then you could become a Chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation.

Structure of the global network

Open Knowledge Foundation Chapters are autonomous and independent non-profit organisations that are officially part of the wider Open Knowledge Foundation Network. They are country or region based and are leading organizations working on open data and open knowledge in their area. We currently have Chapters in 5 countries – Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece and Switzerland, and Brazil will soon be joining us as an official Chapter.

Local Initiatives

If you’re part of an existing group working on openness, or a group of volunteers who would like to do more with open knowledge, you can apply to become an Open Knowledge Foundation Local Initiative and join the other 14 initiatives from across the world.

If you’re an individual looking to start open activity in a country or region where the Open Knowledge Foundation does not currently have an established presence, become an Open Knowledge Foundation Ambassador, and join a global community of Ambassadors in 23 countries.
These are all independent groups, connected to each other through the community-run open knowledge network to support each other, share expertise, tools and materials, and amplify and connect activities around the globe.
